VPS (Virtual private server)
This is a service whose essence is that access to a dedicated server on a specific machine is provided. There can be thousands of such dedicated servers on one machine. Typically, managing such a server is no different from managing a regular, physical one.
Here are some examples of using VPS:
- Launching web applications and websites
- Excellent testing platform for developers
- Can be used as backup storage
VPS hosting can be compared to dedicated and shared hosting. If with dedicated hosting you have a whole machine at your disposal and no one can influence its performance, except you of course, then in shared hosting, all resources are shared and the work of one
site can significantly affect another. So, VPS hosting is somewhere in between.
There are 3 types of VPS hosting:
- Unmanaged - in this case, the hosting provider manages only its physical part, everything else will be on the one who rented this hosting machine
- Managed - the hosting provider is engaged in full server maintenance. Updating the OS, software versions, solves security issues, etc.
- Semi-managed - Something in between managed and unmanaged hosting.
